The Red River gum provides good sources of food and also has medicinal uses. Lerp scale, a small white substance found on leaves is a highly sort after source of sugar and carbohydrates. There are also grubs found in the trunk and the roots. The sap from the tree is also harvested by mashing up the bark and mixing it with water to create a medicinal wash.
